1.    What is coaching?

Coaching is an action-oriented partnership between client and coach that enables you to gain clarity on where your life is now, and empowers you to make whatever changes you need to create a life that is great.

The essence of coaching is that:

    * the relationship between coach and client is collaborative and egalitarian, not authoritarian;
    * the focus is on constructing solutions not analysing problems;
    * clients are capable not dysfunctional;
    * it is action-oriented and goal-focused.

2.  How much does coaching cost?

I charge $120 per session.

3.    Why does coaching work?

Coaching works because you have someone with you to help you objectively examine your life and provide encouragement and structure as you clarify how you want it to be and how to make it that way.

As the Business Journal 4/10/00 put it:

“…[a coach is] part advisor, part sounding board, part cheerleader, part manager and part strategist.”  That’s a pretty positive input to have in your life.

4.     Why has coaching so recently emerged as a profession?

Probably because there is now a demand for it! Life these days is far more complex than it used to be. People have more choices in life and have a higher expectation of what they want out of life. Having an independant coach to talk to can help you to make the most of your choices and reach your highest expectations.

5.     What's the difference between coaching and counselling or therapy?

Sausalito.net described the difference in August 2000 as: “Coaching is not about the past and figuring out why and how life got so complicated or overwhelming. It’s about moving forward on the things that matter most to you, dissolving barriers and blocks to your own success and designing a life you love.”

Or to quote the International Coach Academy: “A therapist typically works with a dysfunctional person to get them to become functional. A coach works with a functional person to get them to become exceptional.”

To use a sporting analogy: if you want to be a good tennis player, you hire a coach to improve your performance. But if you have a sprained ankle that prevents you from playing tennis then you need to have it treated by a physical therapist first. It's the same with life.

6.      How long does coaching take?

Initially I ask you to commit to four sessions. Once those are complete you can continue for more sessions, or finish coaching, or we can develop a maintenance program whereby you have less frequent sessions at a rate that suits you.

The actual length of time varies, although most clients tend to have between four and twenty-four weeks of weekly coaching, followed by a maintenance program. The maintenance program might be fortnightly or monthly sessions over subsequent months, or take the form of one month of coaching on one month off. The form it takes depends totally on you and your needs.

7.      How do we formalise the coaching arrangement?

Once you decide to start coaching I will give you a welcome pack which includes a contract for you to sign and policies and procedures which outline how I operate.You’ll also receive some activities to undertake before your first session to get you clearer on where you are and where you want to be, so that you can start the sessions already in action.

8.    What is the benefit of phone coaching?

Phone coaching has two great benefits:

1.  You save time as there is no need to go anywhere to attend the session. You can call from the comfort of your home or office.

2.  Phone coaching eliminates distractions so you are better able to focus on the content of the conversation.

So while it may seem odd initially to be coached by phone I highly recommend that you try it. The majority of my clients have been coached by phone and attest to its effectiveness.
