#230: Sink In to Sync In

Published Sunday, April 15, 2018

It's Autumn, the “season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” to quote Keats - a time of ripening and reaching fulfillment. Mmm, doesn’t that sound so sexual!

It’s not an intense, fiery time of year though and I don’t advocate an overly intense approach to sex.

Too many people go too far too quick, rushing into it, without allowing the time for the ‘ripening’ in order to achieve real sexual fulfillment.

Truly awesome sex always takes connection, a 'sinking in' within oneself and with each other. It’s different from the rapid-fire approach to sexual excitation, which is the more “normal” mode in this society. With this sinking in comes a ‘syncing in’, where you can let go and really feel each other, really tune in - and for a while the two can indeed become 'one'.

This is so different to the performance approach so many people are trapped in, with each person in their head, wondering if they’re doing the 'right' thing or responding in the 'right' way, or thinking about something else entirely and wishing it was all over!

With sinking in to sync in, it’s not about the head, it’s about two bodies moving in union, in an unstructured flow of pleasure. No expectations, no focus on orgasm, it’s just about the pleasure. That pleasure can be slow and sensual or intense and hard, it can be short or it can continue for hours. It simply is what it is.

Syncing in is about mindfulness - being present in the moment. Using your breath, your awareness, silencing the monkey chatter, letting go of distractions, and simply being there, allowing your eroticism to express in whatever way is real.

So in the mellow season, take the time to sink in and to sync in, to connect mindfully and with presence, and discover just how sublime love-making can be...

#227: The Adolescent Male Masturbatory Model of Sex

Published Saturday, March 10, 2018

For generations we raised our girl children to think they’re not sexual, that they shouldn’t be sexual, and if they were sexual - stoning or burning them to death or locking them away in insane asylums. Women didn’t have a chance to explore their sexuality, and neither did their partners.

So, with no alternative, when a man married he basically kept on doing with his wife what he’d been doing with himself for years - masturbating. Since puberty the adolescent boy had been stroking his penis as fast as he could until he ejaculated. So when he got a female partner, not knowing any better, he kept doing that inside her.

Essentially men were masturbating inside their wives.

So the standard approach has three parts:

1. Find yourself aroused - you have to be horny before you start.

2. Stroke genitals rapidly - it's all about the shagging

3. Have an orgasm - we all know the 'rule' that sex ends when the man ejaculates - right?

I call this theAdolescent Male Masturbatory (AMM) Model of Sex.

It’s what we in the West have done for millennia.

Then, a mere few decades ago, we had the sexual revolution. Suddenly society decided that sex was good and that it was OK for women to want and enjoy sex. But, the only model we had was the AMM Model of sex. So now everyone was supposed to want and enjoy sex like a teenage boy masturbating: sudden onset of desire, rapid and intense genital activity, one orgasm at the end, generally accompanied by “naughty” and “sleazy” thoughts.

The problem is though, that most people don’t actually like sex like that. And even if they do, it’s very limited.

Unfortunately, with a lack of alternatives, our society has focused on the AMM Model:
- genital oriented,
- orgasm oriented,
- fantasy features that appeal to adolescent boys, such as pneumatic breasts and abnormally large penises,
- and it’s very youth-oriented.

And it’s total madness for women. In the space of a few decades we’ve gone from lack of sexual interest as being considered the norm for women, to ‘low libido’ being the biggest sexual ‘dysfunction’ of women. And we’ve got women limiting themselves to clitoral orgasms when the female potential is so much more than emulating the limitations of male orgasm. (Not to disregard clitoral orgasms, they are very fine things, but they are just a 'blip', a moment in time compared to what's possible...)

Even for men, as a man matures, his skills as a lover should far exceed the limited thrusts of a penis. Yet men take little blue pills by the bucket load so as to have erections like a young man, without realising that there’s so much more to sex than a hard cock.

When adult men and women realise what their sexual potential is, there’s no way they’d want to limit themselves to the genital fumblings of ‘normal’ (AMM) sex.

There is some acknowledgement that women don’t orgasm the same way as the ‘normal’ male, so now we have the Chivalrous AMM Model of Sex. That is, give her an orgasm first, and then continue with the standard procedure. There’s still an expectation that they’ll both be horny first, the genitals are the focus, the orgasm is the main event, and it’s all over when he comes.

Boring!

It’s time we moved on from this limited view of sex and sexuality. I believe that society is shifting, that people are starting to realise that there’s got to be more to sex than this, that sex is not some brief act of friction between genitals for a momentary climax at the end.

That’s why people are exploring the sensual, the spiritual, the playful, the 'wicked', the energetic aspects of sex. There is so much more to sex than mutual masturbation.

Our human sexual potential is an awesome thing, every human’s birth right and definitely worth exploring.

#222: Project 'Great Sex'

Published Sunday, December 31, 2017

It's the new year, a time for committing to bettering yourself. What better area of life to commit to focusing on than your love life?!

Whether you're single or partnered, we can all focus on that fundamentally important contributor to health, happiness and well-being - your sexuality!

So I'd like to suggest you commit to a Year of Great Sex! Let's call it your 'Great Sex' Project.

The Great Sex Project for Couples

In other places I’ve written about Consensual Non-Monotony. It's a play on words as I've also written about Consensual Non-Monogamy. The latter term describes how to have a successful non-monogamous relationship, but since most people choose to be monogamous, the trick is to overcome the biggest problem with long-term monogamous relationships – monotony - hence the term Consensual Non-Monotony. The important point here is that it's got to be consensual, that is, you both have to agree to be non-monotonous and you both have to commit to doing whatever it takes to have an on-going, great sex life. Make it a project! Why not? You have renovation projects together, holiday projects together, get healthier projects together, so why not a better sex project?

If you don't, there probably won't be much improvement, in fact, the monotony could continue on and on and on and on and on... How many more years till you die...?

There are three stages to this project:

1) Know what you want
2) Communicate what you want
3) Make it happen

The first stage is all about understanding your eroticism - what you like and what you don't like, where and how and when and how often you like it. This is really important.

The second stage is even more important - you have to be able to communicate openly and honestly with your partner about sex. This isn't easy, particularly for many women, who tend to be great at communicating in all other areas of life except this one! However, I've noticed in my work with couples that one of the benefits of therapy is that people get used to talking about sex with each other. Once they get to that point, the miracles start happening.

The third stage is obvious, but not necessarily easy. There's no point just talking about it, you have to make it happen. This will involve ditching myths and making lifestyle changes. I’ve talked about these things elsewhere at length.

And then the cycle repeats, because what you want and how you feel is constantly changing. You need to constantly reevaluate, communicate and change. Forever. It’s an ongoing, ever-changing, ever-evolving process.

The Great Sex Project for Singles:

What goes for couples goes the same for singles too. You make the commitment to better sex, and then go through the same stages:

1) Get clear about what you like.
2) Be open about communicating this with you new love interests.
3) Make the necessary changes you need to be able to do this.

I’ll admit that this is easier said than done for many people, but like everything else, practice makes perfect. So start small and slow, with baby steps, and gradually, as you get used to this way of relating to each other, you can take ever-more-daring steps until one day you’re flying!

And of course, I'd love to help you along the way with all my offerings!

#218: The Bedroom is for Expression, Not Suppression

Published Saturday, December 02, 2017

Sex is one of the great forms of human self-expression. It's a place where creativity, physical movement, pleasure and joy can manifest, just like the other forms of human expression - music, art, design, dance, cooking, sport, writing.

But people don’t often see sex as self-expression. More often sex has so much attached to it that there is more suppression around it than expression.

Hindered by all the myths around sex in our society, caught up in our heads about what we should or shouldn’t be doing, about what’s right or wrong, confusion about expectations and obligations, sex often is more fraught with fearing than open to freeing.

Think about your own sex life: is there more expression or suppression? Would you describe it more as fearful or freeing? If it’s further down the negative end, what can you do to start shifting it to the positive?

• Is it shifts in your head? Do you need to change your way of thinking?

• Is it shifts in your heart? Do you need to change your way of relating?

• Is it shifts in your gut? Do you need to change your way of doing?

Do you have a vision of what a wonderful sex life would be like? Is this vision true to you and your values and your desires, or is it another ‘should’, based on what you think it should be rather than what is right for you?

Sex can, and should (yes, ‘should’, one of the rare occasions when it’s OK to say ‘should’) be a wonderful thing - for you. It can be simple and infrequent if that’s right for you (in fact you don’t have to have sex at all) or it can be your life’s work and passion (then you’d be a sex geek like me). The important thing is that it is life-enhancing, and that by engaging in sex you feel better for it, preferably at many different levels - physically, emotionally, spiritually.

Express yourself!

If you need help moving from suppression to expression, book in for sex therapy at The LoveLife Clinic.

#217: The Three Types of Sex All Couples Need

Published Saturday, November 18, 2017

I like to divide sexual encounters in a long-term relationship into three types:

Simple Sex – short and comforting
Sensual Sex - luscious and bonding
Spicy Sex – exciting and adventurous

Simple Sex, also known as Cup of Tea Sex, is that nice snuggle under the covers, nothing unexpected, nothing wild. You know each other, you know what works, you have a satisfying time. No great fireworks, but it’s good. Like a cup of tea: simple, warm and comforting.

But a sexual diet of just Simple Sex is pretty dull. And if there’s not a good connection, it will feel empty.

Sensual Sex is when you take the time to create a gorgeous atmosphere and take the time to enjoys each other’s bodies in a sensual and loving manner. In this way the sex becomes very connecting, very bonding, very deep. This is the essence of Tantric sex, and with practice can lead to ecstatic states of being.

Which is wonderful and wholesome, but can do with some spicing up at times.

Spicy Sex is when you push your boundaries and do things that you find a real turn on (if a little intimidating!). What that is will depend on you and your own desires.

Spicy Sex could be as simple as introducing a sex toy to your sexual play, or starting with a slow striptease. It could be planning a weekend away and then visiting the vineyards knowing you or your partner has no knickers on. It could be visiting a sex store and bringing home something new and unusual (“Now just how does this bondage tape stuff work?”) It could be visiting a Swinger’s Lounge. It could be having a nude dinner party, either the two of you alone or inviting some of your better friends… The possibilities are endless. But keep in mind that Spicy Sex doesn’t just happen; it requires your creativity and your intention.

Now, given the reality of modern lives, it’s unlikely that every sexual encounter is going to be Spicy Sex. Apart from the time involved, it would be like eating gourmet food all the time, which can get a little wearying. Depending on your circumstances, Spicy Sex could be an annual weekend away, or it could be a monthly “challenge” where you take it in turns to create a “Spicy Saturday In”.

However, if you think Spicy Sex is the great aim, you’ll have trouble getting there without the Sensual Sex. Because as I’ve so often written about before, I believe that for a couple to be open enough with each other that they can be real about their desires, they have to be truly open to each other, and you need sensual connection for that. I encourage couples to set aside some 'us time' once a week to have a more extended intimate encounter. Start with a bath; light candles; play music that moves your soul; spend time touching each other; hold each others’ gaze as you move slowly together in intercourse. Experience the ecstatic sensations of the valleys of sex, rather than just the intense peaks. Feel the deliciousness of it all. Experiment with blindfolds or restraint to heighten the sensory arousal, add sensory elements of taste, sound, touch and smell.

Really lose yourselves in the experience.

So, maybe you could aim for Spicy Sex once a month, Sensual Sex once a week and Simple Sex once or twice a week. I can’t be prescriptive though. So let’s say plenty of nice Simple Sex, regular Sensual Sex, all interspersed with some Spicy Sex now and again.

Having said that, the three categories don’t have to be mutually exclusive. A late night quickie under the covers is Simple Sex, but it can also feel very sensual if for example you light a candle by the bed and look deeply into your partner’s eyes as you make love. Or a quickie in the bathroom while your kids are having their porridge can certainly have elements of Spice (a la naughty teenagers trying not be caught). Ideally a Sensual Sex session will be highly erotic and you can swing between the intensities of the peaks of sex and the exquisiteness of the valleys.

It’s all good! So allow for all types of sex in your life, from the simple to the spicy (whatever that is for you) and you’ll keep your sexual connection strong and your life so much more satisfying.

#202: Seven Benefits of Attending A LoveLife Couples Tantra Retreat

Published Sunday, July 23, 2017

Taking a break together is always a good thing to do, helping you relax and rejuvenate and hopefully have some quality sexy time away from the stresses of everyday life. So why would you add a couples retreat to your time away? What are the benefits to you of going to one of my LoveLife Couples Retreats?

Well, where do I start?! Feeling the love and connection in the group and seeing the couples blossom is an experience that’s hard to put into words.
But I’ll try...

1. Learn the Tantric approach to sex, its physiological basis, and why it’s so important for modern lovers.
I love the way science is reaffirming ancient wisdom in so many ways, particularly when it comes to sex. The Tantric approach is essentially good sex - connected, erotic, intimate. It’s about slowing down so that you’re in the chill zone, as good sex is not possible if you’re stressed; it’s about ‘syncing in to sink in’ as you can’t have good sex if you’re not connected; and it’s about being mindful, as you can’t have good sex if you’re not present to the experience.

In the retreats I explain the theory and present the practices in a way that is appropriate for contemporary couples. As so many participants say, it’s not ‘woo hoo’ or ‘fluffy’ and makes good practical sense that you can incorporate into ‘real’ life.

2. Learn how to keep your ‘Couple Bubble’ strong.
There are three entities in your relationship, each of you as individuals and you as a couple. When your ‘couple bubble’ is strong, your connection extends into your individuality and makes life connected and resilient. A strong Couple Bubble means really understanding your partner, and yourself, so that you connect and communicate in a way that works for your partner as much as yourself. Essentially you become experts on each other.
In the LoveLife Couples Retreat you’ll learn all sorts of fascinating things about yourselves - your attachment styles, your love languages, what stage of relationship growth you’re in (symbiosis/fusion - differentiation - couple bubble); and you’ll learn how to use this understanding to connect and communicate.

3. Learn how to talk about sex, to develop an erotic language together.
One of the key elements of the retreats is that you’ll learn how to actually talk about sex. This means learning how to have open, supportive communication general, and particularly in regard to sex. People often tell me I give them a language to talk about sex, and in the immersive experience of a retreat you’ll certainly discover how you can talk about sex in an open, creative, inspiring, erotic and non-sleazy way! It’s kind of like making sex a mutual hobby.

4. Learn how to merge your sex and love energy so that you keep yourselves ‘simmering’.
I believe that one of the most powerful elements of the approach I teach is that you merge the love and sex energies - which is one of the reasons that it is good for long-term lovers as it’s not just about lust. Once you get this, you can constantly share this energy between you. You’ll find yourselves sending each other little quanta of this delicious energy all through the day, keeping your couple bubble strong and keeping the two of you ‘simmering’ so it’s easier to move into love-making.

5. Learn how to explore the ecstasy of the ‘valleys' as well as the intensity of the ‘peaks' of sex.
While vigorous sex, what we can call the ‘peaks’ of sex, has its appeal, it’s in the valleys of sex that you find real ecstasy. In the retreats you have time to really explore how to relax your genitals and get very present in them so that you can have extraordinarily beautiful sexual experiences. You’ll discover the many and varied ways of being orgasmic and how to lengthen and sustain erotic and sexual connection (as well as how to have a Tantric quickie!)

6. Learn ways to pleasure each other for heightened erotic arousal.
We explore what I call the yin and yang of sex - exploring the concepts of giving and receiving, leading and following, intensity and subtlety. You’ll learn about the Seven Elements of Sex, elements of your sexual being. By tapping into these elements you can become integrated within your individual and partnered sexuality and explore your eroticism. And you'll learn the Seven Flavours of Sex, the different styles of eroticism, different sexual tastes or flavours.

7. Develop an approach to sex that is endlessly creative and satisfying!

That’s what it’s really about! When you can keep your connection strong, communicate openly and explore together, you’ll find that your love-life thrives. The retreat is a start, or part of an on-going journey of life and love together.

Couples of all ages and stages of life and relationship come along to the retreats. Some are healing their relationship, some are starting a relationship, others have a great relationship and that’s in part because they do cool things together like this retreat! What they definitely have in common is a love for each other and a commitment to co-creating a meaningful sex life that strengthens and enhances their love and their life.

I’m not aware of any other couples retreats in the world that combine the relational, the sexual and the spiritual in such a grounded, practical and inspiring way.

So, will I see you and your beloved at one soon…?
