#179: Men Have Not Evolved to 'Sow Their Seed Widely'

Published Friday, October 21, 2016

There’s a myth perpetuating in our society that men are “naturally” more promiscuous than women. One of the reasons given for this is that men have evolved to “sow their seed widely” so as to have more children and therefore ensure the continuity of their genes.

I'm never sure whether to pull my hair out in frustration or laugh at the ludicrousness of such as suggestion, which I hear so often, even from intelligent thoughtful people.

The fact is that the “sow seed widely” form of reproduction is generally only practiced by the lower orders of animals, such as amphibians and fish and coral. In these species the female lays huge quantities of eggs, which hatch into offspring, most of which don’t survive until reproductive age. The males conversely, have to spread huge amounts of sperm around, to catch the widely scattered eggs.

As you go further up the complexity of the animal kingdom you find that there is less and less spreading of seed by the males as the females give birth to increasingly dependent young. By the time you get to humans at the top of the complexity scale and at the extreme end of the infant nurturing scale, you get offspring that are so useless they take years of intense looking after before they are capable of fending for themselves and hopefully living to reproductive age.

The reason that human infants are so helpless in the beginning is that they have such huge brains that they have really big heads, and the baby has to be born before its head gets so big that it can’t get out of the womb through the birth canal. So babies are born when their large brains are still relatively undeveloped. They require years of care until their brains have developed to a point where they can fend for themselves (around seven years of age).

Now, given that there were no single mother benefits in prehistoric days, it would have been virtually impossible for a woman to raise children on her own. The human race would not have become as successful as it has if the men were wandering around impregnating women randomly and leaving them to fend for themselves.

No, rather, both parents were required to work together to provide for themselves and their family. In fact, the whole group would have helped in child rearing. When you look at hunter-gatherer societies it’s very much the whole tribe looking after the children, because the tribe needed the children to survive in order for the tribe to survive. Humans are a very cooperative bunch. We've had to be. It’s our ability to cooperate that has enabled us to become so successful as a species - especially given our pathetically useless young!

The result is that humans have evolved (or been designed) to have frequent and highly pleasurable sex so that the parents can feel good about staying together as they need to stay together for the sake of the children. If sex was just about reproduction then women would only be attractive to men when they were ovulating, and there would be no need for either sex to have enjoyable sex (as is the case with almost all other species).

All of which doesn’t deny that there are still highly promiscuous men. The point is though, that they can’t use the “sowing the seed” theory as their excuse!

#173: Giving Good Head Does Not Mean Simulating A Vacuum Cleaner

Published Saturday, September 03, 2016

Yes, I know on the porn clips the women giving men oral sex appear to be applying an extraordinary amount of suction and vigorous attention to the penis, and the man appears to be enjoying it. But you know what - they’re actors. You don’t know if they’re actually enjoying it. That’s not what porn is, porn is designed to be visually stimulating, it’s supposed to be what looks arousing, not what actually is arousing. Never assume that what you see on porn feels good.

And yes, I know when a man masturbates he tends to stroke his shaft vigorously.

But your mouth is not a hand. Your mouth is completely different to a hand, not only in the way it holds a penis, but in the mechanism of how it moves. Your hand is attached to a very flexible wrist, which is attached to a very strong and mobile arm. Your mouth is part of your head, attached to a delicate and not very maneuverable neck.

It is not possible to use your mouth like a hand without doing severe damage to your neck. Let the porn stars get regular physio for their oral antics, it’s probably tax deductable anyway. It’s not for you.

So, if your intention in giving your man oral pleasure is actually pleasure and not performance, then let’s look at what really makes oral sex pleasurable for a penis.

Your mouth has lips and a tongue and cheeks. All those lips and tongue and cheeks can move, and in moving can stroke and caress and tantalize a penis in ways that your vagina can’t, and with a warmth and wetness that your hands lack. So use the warmth and wetness and movement of your lips and tongue and cheeks to give him pleasure. Some suction is good, but you don’t need any more than you would give a lollypop. Avoid using your teeth unless specifically requested to.

Most of the sensation in a penis is in the head, so you only need to put most of the oral focus on the head. Touch it and tease it with your lips, lick it and stroke it with your tongue - with laps and swirls and little tickle movements. Blow on it too.

Putting it into your mouth you can continue to use your tongue and add movement with your cheeks, as though you are massaging the shaft with your cheeks, rather than applying full suction.

Add to the stimulation by using your hands on the shaft of his penis while stimulating the head with your mouth. Use the other hand to stimulate his balls, or his anus (if he’s open to that - excuse the pun!) - or stroke other parts of his body while giving him oral: his nipples, his feet, his thighs, or anywhere really!

As to deep-throating, sure, do it if you want to. You can open up the back of your throat by making a yawning motion, which will enable you to bring his penis further into your throat. Unless you have a particular penchant for deep ramming, I’d suggest you do the odd deeper throat interspersed with much more shallower attention to the head and upper shaft, using your hands for the rest of the shaft.

Remember, you’re the one doing the giving here, you’re in charge. If you find the man is getting a bit physical and starting to thrust deeper than you’d like, hold his thighs with your hands so he can’t get in too far. If you’re not in a position to do that, then move!

You may have to train him in this approach. Some men have never had a head job that wasn’t mimicking a vacuum cleaner, so might be expecting the porn star approach. I’ve had plenty of feedback from people who’ve tried this approach that the man’s reaction tends to be along the lines of “Holy F! What are you doing?! Oh my god that feels good….”

So, tap into your feminine softness, take oh so delightful control of his member, and tantalise and torment him with previously unknown delights.

It will take him by very pleasant surprise...

#171: Is Porn Making Men Less Masculine?

Published Saturday, August 20, 2016

I see a lot of male clients who watch a lot of porn, and one thing that strikes me about these men is that they are not very masculine.

A man who is mature in his masculinity is:

  • Connected
  • Confident
  • Contributing, and
  • Creative
A man like this is able to make love in a way that they both have an amazing time.

I don’t have a problem with porn per se. People have always liked to watch other people having sex. The problem happens when porn becomes a substitute for real sex, or when it becomes considered normal sex, rather than just something that is visually titillating.

The heavy porn watchers have an immature masculinity.

Let’s look at how porn interferes with a man’s sexual growth:

1) Connection: Porn teaches men nothing about connection. A man is never going to learn how to connect deeply and intimately with his partner if porn is his main source of sexual information. Yet without connection a man will never be a great lover, not even a good lover, especially over the long term. Connection is absolutely at the basis of all good sex.

2) Confidence: Porn reduces men’s confidence sexually as the images portrayed are of men who are unnaturally well endowed, who can last for unnaturally extended periods of time, and who can cause extreme responses in their female partners without warm-up. So many men, particularly young ones, take porn’s fantasy portrayal of sex as “normal” and feel inadequate in comparison.

3) Contribution: Porn tends to portray the man as the recipient of ardent attention from females. Which might be a lovely fantasy, but women generally respond better to a man who contributes, than one who sits back and expects her to do all the work. The lazy male lover will never get the response from his woman that both of them deserve, and he’ll never learn how to evoke this response through watching porn.

4) Creativity: Porn does not teach creativity. Creativity has elements of subtlety that you will never see in porn. Being a visual and aural medium it tends to be in your face: bigger, harder, faster, louder, rather than softer, sensual, playful and exquisite. Creativity is not about learning a trick or a new position; it is far more subtle than that.

So given that porn reduces these four key elements of a man’s ability to be a great lover, that it generates in men an immature masculinity, is it any wonder than so many women are unsatisfied by their lovers, not wanting the third-rate sex their partners can offer them? And is it any wonder then that the men can stay trapped in that infantile sexuality and remain hooked on the screen where it’s so much easier, rather than becoming a better lover through experimentation, research and practice?

Porn is like the fast-food equivalent of sex, it’s easy, it’s immediate, and it’s all done for you - but ultimately it’s not truly satisfying, which can lead to a need for more and more in a futile, endless quest for the satisfaction that constantly eludes.

By all means, watch a bit of porn for the titillation, there’s nothing wrong with that - just don’t get hooked in and grow backwards!

#166: Solo Cultivation - Mindful Masturbation for Men

Published Friday, July 15, 2016

Sure, sometimes there are times when you want a quick wank, just as stress release or to rid yourself of a persistent urge. But for a man who wants to be a great lover, someone who is in tune with his sexuality and can make awesome love with his partner, what you really want is ‘solo cultivation’.

This term comes from the Taoist (Chinese) sexual practices. It essentially means you are masturbating to improve yourself. The furtive wank in front of the computer watching three barbie doll look-alikes pretend to be getting off on each other is fine, but it’s not improving yourself. It’s a bit like grabbing a take-away hamburger from a fast-food chain - that’s not great nutrition, it’ll get you by when you’re desperate for a feed, but you won’t develop a great body from it. Wanking to porn as opposed to mindful masturbation is the same.

We don’t generally think of masturbation as a way to better yourself, so this will take a bit of mind shift.

First, you need to make time and space, and move away from the computer (or other device). Be somewhere comfortable, such as sitting in an armchair or reclining on a pile of pillows on your bed, and make sure it’s a chilled environment, maybe play some cool music.

Do some belly breathing for a few minutes, nice and slow, to get yourself relaxed. Then do a body scan, where you bring your focus to all the parts of your body, from toes through to tips of your fingers and top of your head, noticing where there’s tension and consciously relaxing those parts.

When it feels right, take hold of your penis, and bring your attention to it. Breathe into your penis and really connect with it, feeling that you and it are a team. Start moving in a pleasurable way, no rush.

Then as you play with yourself do the following (this can be over many sessions, not necessarily all at once):

  • Notice how aroused you are on a scale of 1-10.
  • Practice raising and lowering your level of arousal, with hand motion, pace and rhythm and your thoughts.
  • See if you can hang around the 7-9 level, as though you are swimming in the pleasure.
  • When you find yourself getting excited, notice how your energy rises in your body and practice lowering it by belly breathing.
  • Squeeze your pelvic floor muscles at various levels of arousal and see if you can get a sense of drawing the sexual energy inwards, so that the pleasure stays in the body rather than being drawn outward.
  • Imagine you’re breathing your sexual energy up your spine, over the top of your head and down your front. Practice doing this closer and closer to the point of orgasm, seeing if you can feel orgasmic sensation without ejaculation.
  • Once you do ejaculate (and you don’t have to) continue to have a sense of drawing the energy in and allowing the pleasure to suffuse your whole body. Stay there for a little while, enjoying the sensation, continuing to breathe.

The benefits to practicing masturbation like this are that you’ll:

  • become more connected with your penis,
  • stay present and focused during sex,
  • be more in tune with your partner,
  • be more in your body and less in your head during sex so it will flow more naturally,
  • stay erect more easily (and be less fussed if your erection rises and falls),
  • last longer if you come quickly,
  • come faster if you take too long.

So, get cultivating!

#150: Strength in Softness, Softness in Strength

Published Thursday, January 14, 2016

I had an interesting few days recently, running a workshop for women, followed two days later with a seminar for men.

For me it was truly wonderful to work with a group of 16 women over two days and feel and see them come more fully into the strength and softness of their femininity and become more sexually confident and expressive. Such gorgeous strong feminine women!

And then two days later to work with a group of 15 men for an evening of coming into the strength and softness of their masculinity, becoming more sexually confident and (according to feedback from participants and/or their partners) more sexually expressive. Such gorgeous strong masculine men!

It really brought home to me how equal men and women are in their innate sexual energy, but how differently that energy is expressed.

Vive la difference!

We are all equal, and thank god for social changes that have given reasonable social, political, economic, etc equality between the sexes. God forbid that we should ever go back to a time when women were considered inferior to men in so many ways or that that inferiority be entrenched in society.

But equal does not mean same. Women have proven that they can be as tough as men and can change tires and lead boardroom meetings; and men have proven they can be as tender as women and can change nappies and bake muffins. And that’s great. But please women, don’t lose what is so intrinsically and wonderfully feminine about you as a woman when you do; and please men, don’t lose what is so intrinsically and wonderfully masculine about you as a man when you do.

I’ll say it again: vive la difference!

One of my recent blog posts describes the energetics of the feminine and the masculine in more detail. The essence of it is that for the majority of the population, a balanced women has her softness, her yin, on the outside and her strength, or yang, on the inside and a balanced man has his yang strength on the outside and his yin softness on the inside. It’s this opposition and complementarity that in large part maintains the sexual tension, the ‘oomph’ factor. (In same sex relationships a different but similar dynamic is working.)

If this is lost because the man is a WIMP (weak inept mopey purposeless person) - all softness and no strength, or a SHIT (selfish hard insensitive tosser) - all hard on the outside and no entry to his internal softness; and/or if the woman is a DRIP (docile rueful ineffective person) – all softness with no inner strength, or a SHREW (stressed hard resentful emasculating woman) – with hard barriers on the outside, not allowing access to her softness or her true inner strength, then you’re not going to have the kind of connection that allows for good sex, if any sex at all.

I’m not implying here that to be masculine means macho and aggressive, nor that feminine means pathetic and weak. Far from it. One of the reasons I’ve developed the concept of the Seven Elements of Sexuality is to show the breadth of ways to express oneself sexually, for both sexes.

I see it over and over again in my clinic and when talking and working with people all over the place – men are not being true and real as men in the bedroom, and their women want them to be; and women are not being true and real as women in the bedroom, and their men want them to be.

And everyone is so confused about this!

Because it’s been drilled into us, for example, that it’s bad for women to be submissive and for men to be dominant. But it’s not! Submission does not mean weak, and dominance does not mean domineering. (Nor am I even implying that women should be submissive and men dominant.)

So, we hide from what might be real and do and act the way we feel we should. But over time that acting becomes just that, and we either can’t be bothered or else get frustrated because it isn’t real, it’s an act.

It’s hard to find the right words to describe what I’m talking about, because these words have become so loaded with meaning. Even the word ‘feminine’ has come to imply something weak and dependant, rather than strong and gorgeous. Which is one of the reasons why I encourage people to come to my workshops and retreats to start to feel what it’s like to be real.

I met up with one couple during the week who had done my men’s and women’s workshops over the previous week, and they were beaming! He said that in observing how my partner and I interacted, he actually ‘got’ what it meant to allow his masculine energy to come out in a powerful yet softly respectful way. Already he’d found that this enabled his wife’s feminine energy to emerge without her needing to control so she could let go – and both have truly awesome sex!

Another client who had attended the Luscious Woman workshop walked into my office so transformed from her hard-edged resentment into glowing gentleness that it was all I could do not to hug her - and her husband was finding it so much easier to come into his masculine fullness because she wasn’t terrifying him! Again, great sex resulted!

This is powerful stuff. I really admire you for coming on this journey of self-discovery, particularly in a part of life that is so very screwed up in our society. It can be hard and confusing, but this is fantastic work that can effect deep realisation and true expression of self, without all the barriers that constrain us in expressing who we really are, particularly in relation to our intrinsic masculinity or femininity (and we all have both).
